Houses of the Inner Sphere
The Free Worlds League is ruled by a Captain-General, leaders of House Marik. It is notable as the first successor state founded in the Inner Sphere. It is multicultural, with strong European, Oriental, American and Hindu influences. It also traditionally offered great autonomy to its component regions, like the Duchy of Oriente, Principality of Regulus, and Duchy of Andurien.
The most powerful and largest of the Successor States, by the end of the 3rd Succession War, it numbered more than 500 systems over 20,000 square parsecs, reaching more than 500 light years away from Terra at its furthest point. Ruled by House Davion, the Federated Suns is considered by many to be the military powerhouse of the five Successor States, due to the quality and quantity of forces available to the realm.
The Draconis Combine is one of the Successor States, ruled by the Coordinator, the head of House Kurita. His court is located on Luthien. The Draconis Combine has been ruled by House Kurita since its founding in 2319 by Shiro Kurita, perhaps a descendant of Takeo Kurita, a Vice-Admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II on Terra.
Ruled by House Steiner, the Lyran Commonwealth is renowned for its strong economy, powerful nobility, and its military policy of promotion based on pedigree as well as talent. Though the military history of the Commonwealth is filled with missteps, the Lyran state has endured for many hundreds of years based on the capabilities of its industrial base and by the merits of the rare, capable officers produced by the system.
Originally settled by people from Terra’s Asian nations, one can see the roots of Chinese and Russian culture in people of House Liao’s Capellan Confederation. The smallest of the five Great Houses after centuries of unrelenting warfare, House Liao has come to embrace the harsh reality of police state politics and ruthless control to ensure their nation’s survival against its enemies. The Maskirovka, the Capellan secret police, keeps a cold and calculating eye on the Confederation’s people, who must earn their rights to be citizens, rather than expect such privileges from birth.
The Compact was formed in 3029 as a direct result of the Fourth Succession War. Duchess Candace Liao, firstborn of Chancellor Maximilian Liao and his heir, fell in love with Justin Xiang Allard, a Federated Suns spy who had infiltrated the Capellan Confederation’s spy agency the Maskirovka. Rather than stay in the Capellan Confederation with a double-agent who helped conquer a third of her home nation, she fled and took the St. Ives Commonality with her. In addition, Candace feared the reign of her father, who was descending into insanity.
Duchy of Andurien
The Duchy of Andurien was originally a province of House Marik’s Free Worlds League. Historically, the Andurien worlds have been disputed between the Free Worlds League and House Liao’s Capellan Confederation. Andurien’s ruler, Dame Catherine Humphreys, forged a covert alliance with Magestrix Kyalla Centrella of the Magistracy of Canopus. The conclusion of the Fourth Succession War in 3030, which saw the routed Capellans lose half their territory to the Federated Suns, emboldened them. Andurien declared independence in September of 3030, and began a joint invasion with Canopus of the Capellan Confederation, hoping to seize enough planets to make their alliance a significant power.
Tikonov Free Republic
The Tikonov Free Republic is a small nation that was created out of the fires of the Fourth Succession War. Capellan Chancellor Maximilian Liao’s chief military adviser Pavel Ridzik, a native of Tikonov, decided to secede the Tikonov Commonality from the Capellan Confederation after the Federated Suns invaded in 3028. Ridzik quickly signed an alliance with Federated Suns Prince Hanse Davion that saved his small realm from attack. In exchange, Ridzik agreed not to assault any Capellan worlds, current or former.
